A woman and her two young children had a lucky escape when the car they were travelling in skidded and mounted the kerb before hitting a tree and ending up on its roof.
The accident happened just past a bend close to the Pointer pub at 9.23am yesterday.
PC Gary Cable, of Stanway road policing unit, said: "The road was really wet. The woman started to skid and was worried about going into the path of oncoming traffic so she turned her wheel to the left and mounted the kerb, hit a tree, overturned and ended up in a ditch."
He said the road was closed for about an hour while the car was recovered.
The 29-year-old woman had been driving her Vauxhall Astra from Wivenhoe to Alresford to drop off her children, aged three and 18 months, at playschool.
The woman was shaken and taken to Colchester General Hospital for a check-up. All three suffered minor bumps and bruises.
