Vandals have caused £10,000 damage in a wrecking spree at a landmark church.
Dozens of stained glass windows have been smashed in the attack on St Martin's Church, in Basildon town centre.
There are now plans to put up a protective barrier to keep out the thugs, but that will cost another £20,000.
The church has decided not to make any repairs until the protection is up to prevent further attacks, but it does not have the cash yet.
Meanwhile Basildon Council has agreed to investigate the possibility of installing more CCTV.
The Rev Esther McAfferty said: "People were just so horrified, there is a lot of despair. They feel nothing can be done.
"People are feeling intimidated in the church now."
