Thirty dancers from Maldon and beyond joined the Maldon Green Jackets last night to mark the tradition of farm labourers raising money when times were hard in the winter.
Essex labourers traditionally danced in the streets on the day after Plough Sunday, the day when a plough would be blessed in the hope of a good harvest.
In line with the custom, the Green Jackets danced with painted faces and their jackets worn inside out as labourers did centuries ago to avoid being noticed by their landowners.
The group revived the dances in 1995. The dancers raised £76.72 towards the Tsunami Disaster Appeal.
