Islanders have not given up hopes of getting a police community support officer (PCSO).
After voicing anger at being left out of Essex Police's latest round of officers, West Mersea Town Council has decided to keep perservering.
Members agreed to put £13,000 into the April 2005 March 2006 budget to pay for one themselves.
But it is still down to the Home Office to decide if the island is allowed to purchase one to try to keep crime down.
The money will cost tax-payers about £4 per family per year, and the £13,000 will cover half the cost, with the police putting up the rest.
Council clerk David Tucker said: "We believe there may be a chance to get one if we pay for it."
