Hull City supremo Peter Taylor conceded that Colchester United were the best team on the day as his side were beaten 2-0 at the Kingston Communication Stadium.
Gareth Williams and Craig Fagan struck within two minutes of each other in the first half to put the match beyond the Tigers.
Taylor said: "Colchester deserved it. When we played them a month ago at their place in the Coca-Cola League One they showed us how to play football. They were good again on Saturday and played well.
"I hope that they can get a big team like Manchester United in the next round of the FA Cup."
Hull were limited to few chances in the match, with the best coming on 62 minutes when Danny Allsopp was denied by U's goalkeeper Dean Gerken.
It was a chance which could have changed the game.
"If that goal had gone it would have changed everything," he said. "But at the end of the day some of Colchester's football was good and some of ours was just poor."
The defeat was the first time that Hull have been beaten at home since September.
