A friend fears missing student Sally Geeson has been kidnapped and is being held against her will.
Ashleigh Carr, 21, who has known Sally since they shared A-level classes at South East Essex College in 1999, has been putting up posters across the town appealing for help.
Ashleigh said today: "She wouldn't have got into a car with a stranger. I believe that she has been taken by someone."
Detectives in Cambridge now believe Sally, 22, was dropped off near her home in the city by a taxi driver but do not know what happened to her after that.
Sally, 22, from Cornworthy, Shoebury, was last seen just after 1am on New Year's Day when she became separated from friends after leaving a pub in Cambridge.
