The man, a known drug user in his 30s, was found dead at a Colchester flat.
Paramedics had been called to the home, where two other men were suffering an adverse reaction. A woman who had also taken the drug was unaffected.
Police have now issued a warning that a contaminated batch of heroin could be in circulation.
Det Insp Roy Clark of Colchester CID said: "This death highlights the dangers of taking unlawful drugs."
The ambulance service was called to the home in St Peter's Street, Colchester, shortly after midday on Friday and found three men and a woman who had all used heroin from the same source.
