High winds forced the closure of the Colchester rubbish tip, meaning thousands of homes did not have their rubbish collected.
Over the weekend extreme weather and flooding claimed three lives in Cumbria and parts of Carlisle were still cut off today.
Essex County Council closed the Bellhouse landfill site on Saturday on health and safety grounds due to the high winds battering the country.
This meant Colchester Council and other local authorities could not empty rubbish trucks.
In the Colchester area, homes which normally have rubbish collected on the Friday were due to have it collected on Saturday because of the festive bank holidays.
About 10,000 homes would not have had black bags collected, approximately 75 per cent of the collection round.
Homes affected were in Stanway, Lexden, Dedham, Langham and West Bergholt.
Colchester Council updated its website, out-of-hours contacts and customer service centre to let residents know of the situation.
