Poor parkers beware - Colchester Council's parking attendants keep an eye out for illegal parking. (38715-a)
In all, 163 motorists were left with a £60 fine after failing to park legally, although they will get a £30 discount if they pay up within 14 days.
Colchester Council's parking attendants spent Christmas Day and Boxing Day at home, and charges at the town's council-operated car parks were suspended.
But on the bank holidays Monday and Tuesday it was business as usual.
On Monday, 90 tickets were issued. On Tuesday, 73 people returned to find they had been given a ticket.
Over the past two years, 36,000 tickets have been issued averaging 49 a day.
Steve Brown, parking enforcement manager at Colchester Council, said: "Parking controls apply on bank holidays. Roman Road and Castle Road are the only areas where it doesn't apply on bank holidays."
He said the parking attendants make sure roads are kept clear for emergency vehicles. Anyone not abiding by the rules risks getting a fine.
