A youth was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs following a police raid on under-age drinking in Great Notley Garden Village.
Police arrested the youth outside Tesco supermarket, where a large group of youths were gathered.
A homemade offensive weapon was also found at the scene.
None of the youths was from Great Notley Garden Village, police said.
Sgt Mike Broad, of Braintree police, said: "Braintree police will not tolerate the anti-social behaviour, under-age drinking and use of drugs carried out by some youths in the Great Notley Garden Village area.
"We will be carrying out high-visibility patrols in the area and will enforce the law by means of searches for weapons and the use of penalty notices for disorder."
The youth who was arrested was given a formal reprimand by police and no further action will be taken.
