Controversial proposals for a new cricket ground will be decided by planning inspectors in February.
Abberton Cricket Club want to move to a new ground on farmland so their old pitch can be redeveloped for housing.
But Colchester Council planners ruled against the plans in May.
More than 130 people signed petitions objecting to homes being built on the ground and a new pavilion and pitch at Fingringhoe Road.
Developers say there is room for up to 35 houses on the old ground. But residents claim the housing would be a "blot on the landscape".
The cricket club has appealed against the council's decision. An inquiry will now be held at Colchester Town Hall on February 23 at 10am.
