David Taylor, 34, of Defoe Crescent, Colchester, said the news, which came just before Christmas, was a great relief after four years of hardship.
In November 2000, Mr Taylor was working under a three-quarters-of-a-tonne grass cutter when it collapsed on him.
His back was broken in three places after the accident at Old House Farm, Great Horkesley.
He was crushed under the machine after a chain, which had been welded together two years previously, broke.
Mr Taylor brought a private claim against his former bosses, Geoff and Tim Knighton, after they were fined £4,000 for breaching health and safety rules.
But before the High Court hearing was due just before Christmas, the out-of-court settlement, which is for an undisclosed six-figure sum, was agreed.
Tim Knighton said: "It was a very unfortunate and regrettable accident. I'm relieved we've finally come to a settlement and wish David all the best for the future."
