A University of Essex professor could be among those caught up in the tsunami that has devastated Asia.
Professor David Fremlin, honorary research professor in the university's department of mathematical science, was spending Christmas on an "island in the Indian Ocean" with his wife, Maria.
Evelyn Halls, a friend of the Fremlins, is concerned about their safety.
"They came round to visit earlier in the month and said they were going away to an island in the Indian Ocean for Christmas," she said. "They travel a lot and I said that would be lovely. I thought nothing more of them until I saw the news.
"I haven't heard from them and am all up and down and cannot settle. I hope they have not been hurt in any way and will get in touch soon."
A spokesman for the university was unable to confirm the whereabouts of Professor Fremlin, who lives in Ireton Road, Colchester.
