Stalwart Colchester United fan Geoffrey Fairweather has scored his best Christmas ever.
Memories - Colchester United's Karl Duguid, centre, looks back to the good old days with U's fan Geoffrey Fairweather, right, and John Horwood at Blenheim House, Walton. (40151-1)
As well as having his sight restored in October, after being blind for four years, he met the captain of the club he has supported since 1948.
Mr Fairweather, 77, was a season ticket holder before 26-year-old midfielder Karl Duguid's parents were born.
But they still had plenty to talk about when Mr Duguid made a surprise visit to Blenheim House, a care home for the elderly, in Walton yesterday.
The "wonderful Christmas present" was arranged by volunteer advocate Jimmy Green, of the North Essex Advocacy Team in Great Bentley, which helps older people who need support.
Karl said: "It's interesting to see someone who has supported the club for so long."
