Fears the site of Leigh's popular St Clements Church hall could be developed into flats have led to an emergency action meeting to save the building.
The church's Parochial Church Council (PCC) - headed by the rector, Kenneth Havey - has decided to close the building in 12 months because it is faced with a bill of about £250,000 for refurbishment.
However, a meeting called by a parishioner in the hall yesterday afternoon discussed a fund-raising campaign to solve the problems.
About a dozen people attended but all are remaining tight-lipped and refused to comment.
