An elderly man has died after suffering a suspected heart attack in a swimming pool.
The 79-year-old got into difficulty while he was swimming at Riverside Ice and Leisure in Chelmsford, at 7.30am yesterday.
Lifeguards pulled the man from the water and tried to resuscitate him.
Paramedics took over, arriving three minutes after the call, but he died shortly after arrival at Broomfield Hospital.
Distraught staff at the Victoria Road leisure centre were sent home for the rest of the day. A borough council spokesman said the staff were too distressed to comment on the incident.
