Part of a Government cash grant made to Tendring Council might have to be given back.

The council received the money for its performance in dealing with planning applications.

But it has now been discovered the handout was based on the wrong figures being provided to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM).

Instead of recording the date of the despatch of planning decisions, Tendring had been recording the date the decision notice was printed.

Peter Patrick, portfolio holder for planning, told the Gazette the error had now been corrected and revised statistics provided to the Government.

"It shows a significantly poorer historical performance figures than previously reported," he said.

"It is important to stress, however, that the statistics relate to past performance - rather than the performance of the service today.

Mr Patrick said the ODPM has indicated it might want some of the delivery grant repaid based on the council's new figures for between October 2002 and September 2003.
