A robust defence of regeneratio plans for St Botolph's has been mounted by a leading councillor after Colchester MP Bob Russell branded them a "charade".
Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Russell launched a scathing attack on Colchester Council, accusing it of "dancing to whatever tune is being played by a property developer based in Yorkshire".
Robert Davidson, portfolio holder for regeneration, stoutly defended the council's approach.
"We've been through three consultations over three years, amending the plans every time to suit the majority of opinion," he said.
"We are going to full council in February with the masterplan for everybody to have their say.
"We could have put the masterplan through and then started negotiations, but that would have delayed it. We have been talking to potential developers to get a more realistic view of what is deliverable."
