Officers in Walton have seized their first vehicle under new powers.

Under section 59 of the Police Reform Act, 2002, police officers and police community support officers (PCSOs) have the power to seize motor vehicles such as cars, mopeds and motorised scooters, if they are being used in a manner which causes alarm, harassment, annoyance or distress.

Officers in uniform can seize a mechanically-propelled vehicle provided the driver has been given a warning. The warning lasts for 12 months and is relevant anywhere in the UK.

If the anti-social driving continues the vehicle can be seized and towed away. The driver must then pay £105 to get it back.

PCSO Chris Taylor, who is based at Walton, said a motorcyclist had been given a warning about their standard of driving on November 17.

But he said the motorcyclist was seen again to ride the vehicle in a careless manner and the vehicle was seized.
