An unlit pole stuck in the carriageway on a major route into Maldon town centre could cause death or injury to cyclists, says the chairman of the town's road safety committee.

Stephen Savage, who is also north ward member for Maldon Town Council, said the pole installed by Essex County Council highways two feet out from the pavement on Spital Road was an obstruction to cyclists approaching a dangerous blind junction near where the busy road meets West Square and Fambridge Road.
Although highways had since put a red safety fence round the pole to stop people hitting it, cyclists veering round it could find themselves in the path of cars entering Spital Road from West Square or Fambridge Road, he said.
A spokesman for Essex county highways said the pole was a signpost which would eventually carry a sign for a new mini-roundabout on the junction.
The roundabout, part of a major road and pavement scheme to start in the new year, had yet to be designed, she said.
