Plans to demolish a town centre store and replace it with flats have met with fierce opposition.

Developers want to knock down the Co-op Homemaker store in Kingsway, Dovercourt, and build 21 flats with a car park next to it.

The development would be four floors high with 11 parking spaces and a range of apartments with between two and four bedrooms.

But Harwich Town Council last night unanimously voted to fight the proposal. Its opposition will be registered before Tendring Council makes the final decision.

After several minutes of heated discussion, the council agreed to object to the proposal on the grounds of an over-development, loss of an amenity and a problem with car parking provision.

It was also recommended to write to the Co-op to try to sort out the issue.
