Life at the top of the Braintree League has been given an extra bit of spice with the return of a former men's singles champion.
Peter Hayden, winner of the title in 1992 and 1994, has picked up his bat again after a six-year lay-off and was in the BUSC line-up against Rayne D.
He appears to have lost very little of his natural ability. After a quick knock-up he was back in action - and within no time he had three wins tucked under his belt. All three came in straight games and helped BUSC to an 8-2 win.
Alongside his name on the scorecard was another one from the past. Ian Morrison has not played in the league for some years but he too has been called back into action.
Although he lost to Cec Butcher, a win over Mo Hardy suggests that his skill has not deserted him either.
BUSC, without Hayden, also beat Rayne B 6-4 and remain in third place after wins by both Rayne A and Black Notley A over Colne A.
Rayne A became the first team throughout the league to reach 100 sets after their 10-0 win but Notley struggled a little more before posting a 6-4 scoreline.
That was partly because they had Paul Davison in the side, and partly because they also included John Cleasby, another player back in the league after a lengthy absence. His win over Ken Lewis also helped the cause.
