War has been declared on Wivenhoe's signage.

A growing number of unnecessary and imposing notices are cluttering up the town, it has been claimed.

Town councillors decided yesterday enough was enough and a plea will be made to Colchester Council to reduce them.

A letter will be sent straight to the top in a bid for action.

Mayor Peter Hill said: "I will write to the chief executive of Colchester Borough Council, Adrian Pritchard, on the huge proliferation of street signs in the last year or two.

"We will challenge the borough council and ask 'Can you please find a way to reduce the extravagant street clutter'. "

He says the biggest offenders are the recent radar speed camera signs.

They were put up by Essex Police following a call by the town council to crack down on the speeding problem.

Mr Hill said research had shown one in six drivers drive above the 30 mph speed limit in Wivenhoe.

He said: "We think this is unacceptable. We have been encouraging the police to do more for the speed limit in Wivenhoe."
