Staff at a charity breast screening unit were delighted to answer the phone to Gloria Hunniford who said they are going to receive £5,000 in memory of her daughter.

Gloria called the Lady McAdden breast screening unit in Westcliff and told manager Linda Harrison of the donation from the Caron Keating Foundation.

The foundation was set up in memory of Gloria's daughter who died of breast cancer in April.

The foundation particularly wanted to help The Lady McAdden Breast Screening Unit, also affectionately known as BUST, with its ongoing quest for prevention and early detection of breast cancer.

Manager Linda Harrison was shocked to receive the call personally from Gloria Hunniford but said: "I had a long conversation with Gloria about the charity and it was just like speaking to a member of your family.

"She was so friendly. The family are finding it a bit difficult at the moment as you can imagine.

"On behalf of the charity, I would like to express my thanks to the foundation for this wonderful gift.

"Hopefully they will take comfort from the fact that through their loss and efforts, they are making an enormous difference to the well-being of so many others affected by this disease."

The money, which will be handed over in a formal presentation in the new year, will be used to help make up the £20,000 of new processing equipment and the recruitment of more specialist staff.
