A teenager needed stitches to his face after he was slashed with a piece of broken glass.
The victim was in High Street, Colchester, when the attack happened and had to be taken to Colchester General Hospital for treatment to a 2in wound.
Police today appealed for any witness who saw the slashing to come forward.
Det Con George McGroarty, of Colchester CID, said: "If anyone has got information on the incident they should pass it to us through the usual numbers.
"Incidents of violence are always treated seriously and we would certainly like to identify the assailant as soon as possible."
He said the weapon was thought to have been a piece of broken glass from a bottle.
The incident is being treated as an assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH).
He added that police did not yet have a description of the attacker.
