Bosses at Asda superstore in Colchester are looking into ways of improving the traffic flow from its car park after fuming shoppers were trapped for more than an hour.

Angry customers contacted the Gazette to complain about the problems they faced when leaving the store's car park in Turner Rise Retail Park last week.

The problems appear to stem from the traffic lights at the roundabout linking Petrolea Close with Turner Road.

Sharon Taylor, Asda's customer care manager, said: "There was a particular problem last Thursday afternoon in which the flow of cars from the traffic lights backed up to our car park.

"We do apologise to our customers for this as it must have been frustrating to be stuck in their cars for so long.

"I appreciate some people were then late for appointments and to collect their children."

She said store bosses had been in touch with Essex County Council to see what could be done about improving the problem particularly over the festive period.

Ms Taylor said they were also considering using members of their staff to help direct customers into spaces in a bid to stop other hold-ups.
