Residents are being urged to secure their homes in the lead-up to the Christmas period.
The number of burglaries has increased sharply in recent weeks, with the latest being a disturbed break-in on Friday in Dovercourt.
Now police are concerned raiders might target homes where Christmas presents are being stored.
DC Bernie King, of Harwich CID, said: "We would urge people to review their security in light of the volume of burglaries that are happening in the area.
"Particularly if they have alarms, people should set them whenever they go out, no matter how long for.
"In addition, we ask people to be extra vigilant and to report anyone acting suspiciously."
He added: "Many gifts will be kept underneath trees and they are an easy target for burglars.
"We would advise people to try to keep them out of view until Christmas.
"It would be such a shame if somebody's Christmas was ruined because their presents were stolen."
