Kind-hearted pupils have given their pocket money towards a new bike for a fellow student.

On Tuesday the Gazette told how Kye Pearson's bike was tampered with while he was at the John Bramston School in Witham.

The bike came apart as he rode along Rickstones Road, and Kye, 13, was left with 22 stitches in his mouth, a broken nose and lost tooth.

His mum Lorraine, of Rickstones Road, said nuts linking the handlebars with the rest of the bike had been deliberately removed while they were in public cycle racks next to the school.

Upset by what had happened, fellow year eight pupils clubbed together to get Kye a new £95 bike and it was handed over during assembly yesterday.

Year head Nicky Payne said she was exceptionally proud of the pupils and chose goodwill as the subject for the assembly.

"They all wanted to help Kye and they have all done it totally by themselves.

"Kye will never forget what they have done for him.

"Out of something bad, something good has happened," she said.

The school is investigating the incident in a bid to track down the culprit.
