TABLE-topping Grays were the victims of a mugging at the Rec on Saturday when promotion-chasing Cambridge City City sprang the surprise of the day and ended the home side's 13 match unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory in the Conference South.
It is a blow for Grays going into the holiday derby double header with Thurrock, who enjoyed the best possible build-up with a 2-0 win at Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday.
Aveley were the borough's other winners at the weekend, enjoying a season's best triumph with a 4-0 victory against Berkhamsted at Millfield.
Elsewhere in the Southern League Division One East East Thurrock United's promotion aspirations suffered another setback with their fifth draw in their last seven matches.
They had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Arlesey thanks to Vinnie John's first half equaliser.
It was a case of too little, too late for Tilbury manager Paul Joynes who lost his job on Saturday despite a much improved performance from the Dockers in their 2-2 draw at promotion-chasing Barking and East Ham.
John Purches got both their goals in a match the Dockers deserved to win.
