Revellers could be risking their safety by using unlicensed taxis.
Maldon District Council has issued an urgent warning to partygoers planning to arrange a lift home from Christmas or New Year's Eve bashes to make sure they know whose car they are getting into.
Jon Hughes, community services manager, said most taxi firms in the district were legal and residents had nothing to fear from using them.
"But there are some cabs about that do not hold a licence so they will not have adequate insurance and may not even hold a full driving licence," he said.
"People are risking their safety by getting into illegal cars, not least because they do not know what kind of person is driving it."
