Runaway horses caused an articulated lorry and a 7-tonne truck to collide on the A12.
The accident on the Ipswich-bound track of the Colchester bypass at 12.47pm yesterday led to a two-mile tailback, as far as the Spring Lane junction.
The driver of the articulated lorry, a 45-year-old man of Silver End, suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to Colchester General Hospital.
Police said several motorists swerved and braked when the two horses were spotted beside the road, heading towards the carriageway.
The two HGVs involved ended up blocking the inside lane.
Highways officers were called to clear debris and police directed traffic around the crash scene.
The driver of the truck was checked over by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.
It is not yet clear who owns the horses.
