Enraged cabbies hurled abuse at councillors who recommended a change in taxi licensing rules.
Chelmsford Council's cabinet endorsed a proposal to delimit the number of Hackney Carriages in the borough at a fiery meeting last night.
Taxi drivers vowed to hold more protests, similar to the demonstration that brought Chelmsford town centre to a standstill on Monday night, and said they would boycott working on New Year's Eve as a show of defiance.
More than 50 members of Chelmsford Taxi Association (CTA) attended the meeting as drivers and councillors debated the issue for more than an hour.
They voted in favour of the recommendation to grant a taxi licence to anyone who fulfils the criteria, which will go before the full council in January.
