Residents in Clacton could buy their own crime-busting officers.
A similar scheme has been up-and-running in the Frinton and Walton area for about a month. The six police community support officers (PCSOs) are half paid for by council taxpayers' money.
The town council has budgeted £81,000 for six officers for next year. Essex Police Authority will pay the other half of the cash needed.
Now, residents living in the St Paul's ward of Clacton may soon be asked to do the same.
Pierre Oxley, Tendring councillor for the area and chairman of the St Paul's Residents' Association, said: "I would like to see PCSOs in my ward, particularly in the gardens area."
