The accident happened on the dual-carriageway between Elmstead Market and the traffic lights for the University of Essex and Wivenhoe junction.
Emergency services were called to the A133 at about 7.15am.
It is believed the man had been travelling towards Clacton when his red Vauxhall Astra car crossed the central reservation.
The car then collided with a Vauxhall Vectra car travelling in the opposite direction on the Colchester-bound carriageway.

The Astra, which was badly damaged in the impact, ended up in a nearby ditch and firecrews worked to cut the driver free from the wreckage. The man, who has not been named, was certified dead at the scene.
The Vectra driver, a 26-year-old woman from Dovercourt, was not seriously hurt but was taken to Colchester General Hospital with cuts and bruises.
