Friends of the Earth is campaigning against Essex County Council signing a 25-year contract to handle waste disposal.
In its latest stunt, they dressed up as Father Christmas, a baddie and a fairy to highlight Colchester Council's plans to hand over the contract.
Paula Whitney, co-ordinator of the pressure group, claims the contract will lead to the burning of waste, causing pollution.
However, Colchester Council's cabinet last week discussed joining the scheme, giving it a cautious welcome but kept the way clear to back out if it does not meet the needs of Colchester borough.
