A £50,000 scheme to turn a churchyard in to an "environmental haven" is set to begin in the new year.
St Peter's Churchyard, at the junction of High Street and Market Hill, Maldon, will be transformed into a green and serene oasis of calm with new shrubs, paths, seating and lighting.
Maldon Town Council scooped a Local Heritage Initiative Lottery grant of £24,659, which together with £5,000 from Essex Environment Trust and £5,000 from Maldon District Council will pay for the majority of the works.
The remaining £16,000 needed for the project will be given by the town council, which set aside the funds earlier this year.
Town clerk Helen Philpot said: "It is designed to be much more user-friendly, we hope it will become something of a focal point and somewhere to relax in the town centre."
