A fellow pupil at John Bramston School, Witham, was suspended for three days after the incident which injured 13-year-old Kye Pearson.

Mum Lorraine Pearson, of Rickstones Road, Witham, said after Kye collected his bike from the public cycle rack, it came apart as he rode along the busy Rickstones Road to their home.

She said the nuts linking the handlebars with the rest of the bike had been removed. Kye was thrown over the handlebars, fortunately landing on the pathway instead of the road.

The incident, just a couple of yards from Kye's home, was reported to the school and his mum was expecting an update on the situation. She is now urging the school to keep parents better informed.

School principal Ted Rowley said it provided cycle sheds, which were locked from the beginning to the end of the school day. But Kye's bike was left in public cycle racks off the school premises.

He confirmed he dealt with the situation within 24 hours.

"If pupils do something like this there will be severe punishment," he said.
