A child stole a mobile phone after the adult she was with distracted a shop assistant.
The girl, thought to be about six years old, and a man went into an estate agency in Maldon High Street at 3.40pm on Saturday.
The youngster had blonde hair and was wearing a denim dress. Her companion is described as being about 40 years old, 5ft 8ins tall, balding, with a moustache and wearing a black suit.
