Jessica Stevens Ward, 15, was in the back of a car when it skidded, left the road and rolled over on Saturday morning.
But she escaped with minor bruising and whiplash because she was wearing a seatbelt.
The accident came a year after her twin sister, Molly, suffered serious injuries in a car accident while out with friends.
Her mum, Yvonne Stevens, of Colchester, said: "As a mum all you see is the worst. I just thank God that it wasn't worse than it was.
"Seatbelt awareness is so important. Jessica said to me the paramedic said if she hadn't been wearing the seatbelt she would have gone through the windscreen."
