After more than 100 years of male-only rule, a Braintree club has welcomed its first female full members.

Braintree and Bocking Constitutional Club has been in operation since 1891 in a building known as The Great House, a 17th century grade two listed building in the centre of Braintree.

Since the late 1890s, when Queen Victoria was on the throne, it has run a men-only members policy. Women could become associate members but this did not allow them full access to all of the club's facilities.

Since the decision was made, all former associate female members have made the transition to full membership.

Cliff Willingham, chairman and member for more than 30 years said: "The rule change followed several months of passionate and sometimes intense debate, but now for the first time in its history the club is accepting applications for membership from ladies."
