Councillors have agreed to recommendations for the MORI poll of Brentwood residents to be considered in greater detail after the results showed people are increasingly unhappy with council services.

Members of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee all voted in favour of council officers recommendations that the executive panels and committees of the council should discuss the data related to them in greater depth when they next meet.

Chairman of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee chairman, Cllr Henry Bailey, said: "This is a national trend where MORI polls are showing less favourable results of councils. It is not just in Brentwood which this is happening."

In the last poll, conducted three years ago, 76 per cent expressed satisfaction with the overall service provided by the borough council.

This time only 59 per cent said their were satisfied.

The survey was sent to a random sample of 3,000 people from the electoral register and 1,237 valid responses were received.

The survey was carried out between September 1 and November 20 2003 when Town Hall was under Liberal Democrat control which was a factor quickly seized upon by the Conservative group which was voted into power in June.

Council leader, Brandon Lewis said he didn't think it was any coincidence that the poll showed growing dissatisfaction and then the Conservatives got the results it did.

Former council leader and Lib Dem councillor, Vicky Cook, said the results were like comparing 'chalk and cheese' as the two MORI polls used different methodology.
