Southend played with 10 men for 45 minutes after Darryl Flahavan was sent off to beat Boston at Roots Hall tonight.
Goals from Mark Gower after 15 minutes and Wayne Gray seven minutes later put the Blues into a comfortable 2-0 lead.
But Flahavan received a red card for a deliberate handball after he handled outside his box as he raced out to deny Pilgrim's striker Andy Kirk.
Blues forward Tes Bramble took over between the sticks but was beaten by Kirk in the 49th minute.
However, the striker saved a couple of other shots as the visitors were unable to make the advantage of having an extra man count.
