Drinkers have been warned to contact security staff if they are threatened in town centre pubs.
The advice follows a report of a customer being threatened by a man, who had a knife, who took £5 from him in Yates's in Head Street, Colchester.
The victim walked to the police station to report it.
The thief is described as bald and wearing a blue padded jacket and blue jeans.
