A major Chelmsford employer could find itself homeless, resulting in serious consequences for the local economy if forced to close.
Chelmsford Council, landlord of Chelmsford Car Auctions (CCA) in Drovers Way, Boreham, recently submitted an application to turn it into a depot combining workers from three council depots around the town.
But a letter has been received by the council's planning committee objecting to the plans on behalf of the company and claiming no provisions are in place to relocate it to alternative premises.
It said the closure of the car auctions would have "serious impact" on the local economy, not least with the loss of 83 jobs.
A council spokesman said: "The lease has been brought to an end and the tenant is making arrangements for the relocation of the business."
The planning officer's report recommends the proposals for approval. Members of the planning committee will discuss the plans at a meeting on Tuesday at 7pm in the council chamber at the Civic Centre, Duke Street.
