Detectives investigating an alleged serious sexual assault in a Braintree churchyard are anxious to trace three men they believe may have valuable information.

A 31-year-old woman claimed she was attacked in the early hours of Sunday, August 22 in the grounds of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in The Avenue, Braintree.

Police are trying to find three men believed to have been in the vicinity of the church just before midnight and 1am on the Sunday.

The first is described as white in his mid-twenties, of average height and build with short hair and wearing a red tee shirt.

The other two men were together. One was slightly built, in his late teens, early twenties, with short dark hair, wearing dark clothing, possibly a football shirt with writing on it. He may have been of Asian appearance. The other was white in his late teens or early twenties.

Det Supt Colin Steele of the major investigations team said: "We would like to hear from these men as they may have information that could prove crucial to our investigation.

"The men described or anyone who knows their identity is asked to contact police on 01245 452207."

A 31-year-old Braintree man has been arrested in connection with the alleged assault and released on police bail until early November.
