A controversial proposal to build an annexe at a High Street Church has been turned down.
All Saints' Church canon David Atkins feared the building would become 'a museum' if it did not upgrade its facilities
The bid to clear a graveyard next to All Saints' Church in Maldon High Street and replace it with a 60m square meeting room, with a pyramid roof, was last night refused by Maldon district councillors.
It had been recommended for approval by planning officers going into the meeting of the district council's central area planning committee.
The proposal was to build a £300,000 multi-purpose meeting space with oak plank walls and glazed sliding doors, to accommodate 90 people.
Before the meeting, a petition had been signed by hundreds opposing the scheme, while a large number of letters of objection had also been sent in.
