Former England midfield maestro Paul Gascoigne will not be featuring at Roots Hall this Friday after quitting his player-coaching position at Boston United.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur star had seemed set to take on the Shrimpers, but has now departed York Street after just two months with the Pilgrims.

"I've left on professional terms. I just think I needed to extend my career on the coaching side," said Gascoigne.

"I think it's one of the hardest decisions I've had to make in my professional career so far, but I've done it for professional reasons."

Gascoigne will now complete a coaching course at Lilleshall before attempting to get a player-manager role.
