Rupert Hay, 22, of Magdalen Street, Colchester, went under the needle to have two pictures from Drawing from Life, an exhibition of work by his father, Ian, tattooed on his left arm.
The show opens at Mercury Theatre's Digby Gallery today, running until October 23.
"I thought I would show a bit of dedication and support for my father," Rupert said.
"I haven't showed my father the tattoo yet, and I think it will be quite a surprise for him."
