A man who was once hailed a hero has died after being stung by a wasp while on holiday in Spain.
Paul Harris, of Chelmer Terrace, Maldon, died last Wednesday, aged 60, while staying at a friends house in El Chorro, an hour north of Malaga.
His family flew back from Spain yesterday and were still too upset to comment. It is thought Mr Harris had gone into anaphylactic shock after being stung.
Mr Harris had been staying at the house of long-time friends Jo and Alvar Hurley while they were away in America.
Mr Harris was commodore at the Maldon Little Ship Club from April 2001 to March 2003, carrying out charity work on the club's behalf.
The retired care centre manager was hailed a hero in June 1997 after his actions helped save the life of a man who fell into the water at a London Dock. He dived in after the man fell in at St Katherine's Dock.
