A hefty 84 per cent of people across the region want smoking banned in public, a new survey has revealed.

The poll of almost 8,000 people found a big majority are in favour of smoke-free zones.

Eight out of ten also called for a law banning cigarettes at work. The survey, by the East of England Public Health Group, is being hailed as the biggest health debate ever seen in the UK.

Organisers say the findings support calls by health chiefs to outlaw smoking in public.
